Freedom to explore!
Explore at your own pace, and see the attractions you
want to see, when you want to see them. You can still take
advantage of the day long bus trips, such as the Cape Reinga /
Ninety Mile Beach Bus tours that drive on the beach.
See and Do - Bay of Islands
The Bay of Islands is New Zealand's finest Maritime Park;
secluded bays, marine life in abundance, 144 Islands and
activities galore. It is the origin of European civilisation in
New Zealand and of huge native Maori cultural significance.
The scenery is nothing short of spectacular and can only be
fully appreciated by taking your time exploring the area.
Northland is New Zealand’s warmest region - temperatures average
24 degrees C / 75 degrees F in summer and 16 degrees C/ 61
degrees F in winter.
Two villages,
Paihia and historic
Russell, are nestled on
opposing sides of The Bay. There are many shops and restaurants
overlooking the stunning waterfront. There’s something for
everyone - fishing, forest and beach walks, all kinds of water
sports and great golf courses.
Paihia - is the
Bay of Islands busiest tourist destination.
Almost all of the Bay of Islands water tours leave the
Paihia
wharf several times per day. There is a wide variety of Gift
shops and Specialty Shops. The long beaches are perfect for a
relaxing day in the sun.
Waitangi, just minutes away, is where European settlers
negotiated the terms of the
Treaty of Waitangi with the Maori Natives.
Here you can experience the Native Maori Cultural show, look
through the museum, or even try the Waitangi Golf Course.
There are so many things to see and do, you'll never be
bored!
Russell - You can catch a passenger ferry across to
Historic Russell - New Zealands first capital, and home to many
historic sites. New Zealand as we know it was formed in this
very area. Many original buildings still exist - great examples
of settlers buildings.
Russell is located right on the waters edge, in a fantastic
sheltered bay. Just step off the boat, walk up the Wharf
directly onto the main street. There are many historically
significant buildings and sites: The Policeman's residence, The
Duke of Marlborough Hotel, The Flagstaff, Pompellier house - The
list goes on!
If you're feeling really energetic, try taking a walk over
the hill to Tapeka Point. Great views from the lookout back to
Waitangi and out to Sea!
Opua is a world renowned
stop for boaties. Marine products and repairs are available
here. The vehicle ferry leaves
Opua for the
Russell side of the bay
regularly everyday. There are charter vessels and hire boats
galore!
There is amazing food available at great prices right through
the Bay of Islands. Some of our Staff's favourites are: The
Black Olive pizzeria in
Kerikeri,
Makana Confections in
Kerikeri, Paihia's Ice Cream shops, Russell's waterfront dining,
The Trainspotter Cafe in Kawakawa, the selection of art
galleries and craft shops everywhere, the vineyards and the
beaches!
On The Water - take a look around the Visitor
information centre. There is a wide range of boating activities
to choose from. You can hire a boat, catch the ferry, or take
one of a number of cruises. There are Dolphin spotting cruises,
high speed tours and slow cruises.
The hole in the rock tour is a must do. Most days
(depending on the tides and waves) the boat actually drives
through the "Hole in the Rock" - Literally a big hole in a big
rock! You get a tour through the Bay of Islands on the way.
Remember there are 144 Islands to see, and some of them are
privately owned with some impressive houses.
